Founders News

Founders Garden Club of Sarasota has provided a $20,000 grant to Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium located in Sarasota, Florida to provide support for their study in determining the effects of micro-plastics ingestion on coral health and disease.

Currently, a new and poorly understood disease is ravaging the Florida reef tract. Mote Marine Laboratory is playing a leadership role in a collaborative response. By determining the mechanism of transmission, Mote has the best chance of preventing the spread of the disease. One hypothesis is that micro-plastics, that is, very small pieces of plastic waste found in the ocean, are spreading this disease. Funding by Founders Garden Club will, in part, allow Mote scientists to determine if this is true. The Mote research team will share this information with policy makers and management agencies to implement regulations that may help prevent the spread of the disease further.

Founders Garden Club members Bernice Hebda, Signature Community Projects Chairman, Gina Gregoria, President Founders GC of Sarasota, and Marlene Blalock, Founders GC member and sponsor of Motes Coral Research project, present a grant check in the amount of $20,000 to Karen Stults (2nd from the left) Director of Foundation Relations of Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, located in Sarasota, Florida.

Mabel's Rose Garden

This spring, The Ringling Museum celebrated the legacy of Mabel Ringling's Rose Garden, a formal garden she created at the estate in 1913.
Mabel was Founders Garden Club's first president, and a garden party was the ideal occasion to reinforce this longtime relationship.

As the guests strolled through the gardens filled with blooming roses, they sipped mimosas while enjoying musical entertainment, garden artists and the opportunity to create a flower arrangement. Guests were provided with vibrant colored roses and other unique plant material, and under the guidance of Founder's members, they created a floral design to take with them as a reminder of Mabel's beloved garden.
